Why Pecans Are So Dear to Me

Yesterday, a fellow blogger wrote about her food memories on the blog 40 Pounds by June, and she got me thinking, What foods do I associate with memories, good and/or bad? I didn’t have to think hard for a good food memory.

Pecans have always symbolized my dad. My dad was a truck driver, and he spent many long hours in the rig. Some days, he’d leave before sunrise and return after my bedtime, so I wouldn’t get to see him at all. But, on those nights he did get home early, he’d sit beside me at the kitchen table, roll two round pecans in his hands, and crack open the shells just by pushing them together. No matter how hard I tried to do the same, I couldn’t even dent the shells, so, to my young mind, y dad must have been like God to bend the pecans to his will. Now, when I go back home, if I spy a bag of pecans tucked beside the refrigerator, I smile because a night of shelling’s in store for my dad and me.

I know almonds and walnuts are better choices when it comes to nuts, but pecans have over 19 vitamins and minerals, and 3/4 of a cup just might lower bad cholesterol. Who am I kidding? Even if pecans were the unhealthiest nut on the planet, I’d still eat them if it meant spending time with my dad.

Your turn–what food(s) evoke memories from you?

Love it. Pecans – the feel good nut!

OK – one more. When I was about 7, I had this thing for dill pickles, ate them all the time. So, my Dad started calling me Pickles, even addressed my cards with it. Somehow overtime, that nickname faded away, but I still love them, and smile. Plus, only 8 calories per!

    Thanks for the link 🙂

No problem, Colleen! You went into the science aspect of it, so I hope people do check out your post.

Ah, pickles. I love ’em! My snack of choice at the movie theater. Now, if only they didn’t have so much salt. I’m obsessed with weight gain due to sodium. ><
